Tairāwhiti is famed as the first place in the world to see the sun, and it has made the most of its prime location to build strong forestry, agriculture and horticulture industries.
Tairāwhiti is continuing to grow as new markets emerge in wood processing, medical research and tourism. Tairāwhiti has been identified as a priority for investment and support, particularly for local industry and improving infrastructure resilience.
The Tairāwhiti Economic Action Plan Te Huarahi Hei Whai Oranga lays out the region's plans for economic growth, with 11 local iwi contributing to the Tairāwhiti Māori Economic Report which identifies ways to support and enhance the region’s Māori economy.
